Southern Transport Development Project - Metal Culvert Strengthening
We undertook analysis and assessment of existing long span corrugated metal culverts & underpasses and the subsequent design of strengthening works. The analysis included both 2D and 3D FE modelling of the soil-structure interaction and the distribution of the traffic wheel loads passing above. The fill depths varied from 0.6m to 5m above the crowm of the metal structure, while the structural spans extended up to 10m. the ground conditions beneath the metal structures varied from sound rock to soft peat layers within clayey and sandy soils. The strengthening works included concrete lining installed using a combination of insitu concrete and shotcrete.
