San Tin Interchange Viaduct
This busy interchange at the Hong Kong – Mainland China border included 1120m of post-tensioned concrete box girder viaduct deck with spans up to 65m and horizontal radius of 112m. Precast segmental balanced cantilever construction was used to achieve a high quality finish and rapid erection for this design & construction contract. We led the detailed design of the precast segmental box girder deck which utilised internal post-tensioned tendons to achieve minimal concrete, reinforcement and prestressing quantities. The design was developed to simplify the erection process of the deck, reducing the requirement for temporary prestress. The deck is continuous up to 260m between expansion joints and made integral with all the piers, with bearings only used at the abutments.
