M3 Bridge S20, Detailed Design
We prepared detailed design of an unusual 135m long, 4 span overbridge on the M3 PPP project near Kells in Ireland. The bridge was at a high skew of 69 degrees and was to be constructed using top-down techniques. The deck was a post-tensioned insitu concrete voided slab with the exception that the end spans 5m form the pier were constructed as reinforced concrete in order to limit tendon lengths. Driven and then infilled tubular steel piles were adopted for the piers with the exposed length encased with a concrete skin. A fully time dependant staged construction analysis was undertaken in order to model the effect of creep and shrinkage on the long-term stresses in the structure.
