Roydon Marina

Hewson designed a new marina within an existing lake adjacent to the River Stort in Roydon, Essex. Entrance into the marina is controlled by a 30m pound lock which also enables the boats to step the 830mm between the river and marina water levels. The lock was designed by Hewsons using a form of structure developed centuries ago but was achieved using modern construction materials and techniques. It is the first privately owned lock to be constructed in the past 10 years. High flood levels in the area required the new clubhouse and chandlery to be supported by a steel frame 1.5m above the existing ground level. The scheme also included a piled servicing area and the assessment of an old canal bridge to ensure it had sufficient strength to support the construction traffic.
